Timing

Always allow sufficient time to get to your interview, aim to arrive 5 minutes early. Be aware of issues such as car parking and traffic congestion. Make a note of contact numbers in case of emergencies, being prepared is important. Avoid dashing in, in the nick of time, making you flustered and unnerved. Try to be calm and collected.

Preparation

Gather as much information on the position and company as is possible. Read carefully the Job Description and Person Specification if they are available. Research the company on the Internet so that you have an idea of what they do, size of the company and their history.

Make notes on your relevant experiences in respect of the role. Formalise any questions that you may have, the hours of work, training and development, salary and benefits on offer.

Know who will interview you, who they are and their position. Company hierarchy and structure charts can be useful if available.

If you are not good with names, write them down.

Appearance

For most office positions the recruiting company would expect a smart standard of dress. If you are in any doubt, ask what is acceptable, this can include visible body piercing.

Recruiters are aware that many candidates are on a limited budget, you don't have to be wearing designer clothes but do be clean and tidy. Hair always looks best when clean, and shaved facial hair if applicable.

Baseball caps are a fashion accessory that do not look good at an interview! Clean shoes are usually noticed by interviewers and if it is pouring with rain, pass it off with a joke!

Body Language

When being interviewed always make eye contact, if more than one person is interviewing you, make sure that your look at and respond directly to the person talking.

Interviews can be stressful but try and adopt a relaxed but positive demeanor. Crossing your arms and looking at your shoes or any other nervous defenses like covering your mouth with your hand or pulling at your ear, will not show you in the best light.

Remember that every interview is important, if you can't make the effort for it, then maybe you shouldn't be attending, as these signals will be very clear to the interviewer.

Talk confidently and avoid waffle, if you are thrown by a question or need a minute to think - say so - looking considered is better than a rushed answer.
